Anybody else playing the COD World at War Online Beta? I just tried it last night and it was good fun. I sucked, but it was good fun.

It would be great to see everyone on the battlefield again. I could swear Mani was on my server last night. There was some guy in an AITD clan whose name was Phantasma-something-or-other and he was tearing it up (especially me) he had a KDR of 35-1. I figured it had to be Mani. I'm trying to get Craig (Case) to join in, but he just got Fallout 3, so it might be a little while before we see him online.
BTW, I'm using my original in-game name, so I'm back to Alpha_Gator. What's the Clan tag again? Is it <GkS>? How can I bring shame to the clan if I don't have my tag
Are we doing anything with TS or Vent anymore?
Goat - I hope you're doing well. How's the health?

Health is good, specialty doctor appts. are half a year apart now compared to weeks apart, so I guess thats a good sign.
Haven't heard from Mani, will give him a hollar and see what he's up to. I do know that he had taken our tag off to make himself available to active clans, not even sure what he is playing these days...
I had dropped the Ventrilo, since no one was using it for a while, but can have one back up and running in no time if anyone is interested.
Was there a Beta_Gator and Charlie_Gator?

Glad to hear you're on the mend. Been trying to send positive vibes your way (sorry for getting all hippie on you)

Yeah, if I'm being pwned, it doesn't sting as bad coming from a friend.

I'd like it up, if it's not too much trouble. I can help kick in some funds if it's a matter of expense. please let me know when you've got it up and running and please forward the connection details. Wasn't the pass geeks4me?
Was there a Beta_Gator and Charlie_Gator?
Let me see, there was Alpha_Gator Alpha-Gator and Alfa_Gator. No Betas or Charlies. Delta was the fourth iteration. Since I was running out of variations of Alpha, i went straight to Delta.
What about FruitySack? Is he still around?
I talked to Craig (Case) and he said he was going to check it out, so it looks like he'll be up sooner than I thought.

Okay, new Ventrilo is up, working a few of the kinks out, more info can be found here
I will send an email out the Card Carrying Members, let them know the cobwebs are getting dusted off around here, see if we can stir up any action.

I can't get my microphone to work. I think I need one with a USB connector. I'll have to get one tomorrow.

I don't think the game has a way to join a friends game without being invited - a royal pain. I would use Xfire to join a friends server for the time being

I'm still around, I'm sort of co-leading a competitive clan on 2142 right now with a couple guys I've been playing with for awhile now. We play on twl and are currently 6-0 in 4th place. That wasn't me on cod unfortunately. I tried running the beta but i think my graphics card isn't supported. Hopefully I can upgrade and play in a few months that and other games (like the new starcraft). I still check the boards and am on xfire quite a bit.

It complained about missing a dll, but I updated Direct X and it fixed it. It's ok. I don't see marines putting dot scopes on Thompson's, but I guess it doesn't have to be 100% accurate

Some of my beefs with this game
The spawn system sucks. I will spawn into an artillary barrage or right infrot of an enemy. i get about 4 deaths per round just on bad spawns. The designers seem to like it though. Apparently, they are just ga-ga over the complexity of the model for determining spawns. For me, I can do without the whiz-bang tech and have a spwn system that won't lead to so many instant deaths.
Some of the weapons seem out of balance. SMGs are powerful, while rifels (at least the ones I'm using are weak). The upper level machine guns may be too powerful, though.
Dogs in the game are much too strong. It takes several shots to kill one. They're harder to down then opposing players.
I have yet to see a way to create squads in this game. It's pretty much a free-for-all.
There's no way to join a game a freind is in without being invited.
As for all of that it's a very beautiful game (visually), the maps are well designed and I like the clumsiness of the WWII weaponry.
Does anyone else have any impressions of the game?

I did a little research on the COD site and found that the games does, in fact, have a squad system. This would mean that the spawn system that I griped about is not as bad as members of a squad can spawn on the leader. That said, I have yet to figure it out in the Beta.
Had more than a few run-ins with knuckeheads using RPGs (the old school variety). Think BF2 nade-whores all over again. Killing themselves to take out one person. Brilliant!
The maps are 98% infantry based (which I like). Only one map in the Beta has armor and if they are not supported by infantry, they don't last long. Players earn a bazooka early in the rank structure, so just about everyone can be a tank-killer.
Starting to get a feel for which perks are best for my type of play (dying).
It's still hard to get a feel for the game. Without players acting together in squads, the game is a big free-for-all which lacks the ebb and flow of a good online FPS (like Battlefield). I guess I'll have to wait until the release and let that be the final arbiter of how the game stacks up.
Anyone else have any thoughts on the game?

I don't like the Dogs. I know it's supposed to replace the helo from COD4, but I don't like them. I am just trying to fight my way up to lvl 21 so I can get the bouncing betty mines. I haven't found a way to join a game that a friend is on yet. Roundhouse and Castle (Minus the bugs) are probably my favorite maps. If you figure out the squad usage, let me know!
I am still a little irked about the weaponry, but I suppose I am being too picky. I don't see a Marine using a Ariska rifle, when they were issued M-1's, Thompsons and BAR's....

Microphone,
Yeah the dogs are just too tough. Not only are they tough, but there are so many of them. I can kill one, but the second and third get too close one I've finished off the first that I have no chance. They're very fast and will follow you into a building (unlike a helocopter).
I agree with you on the weapons. They should have made it a little more accurate from a historical perspective. Perhaps something along the lines of a 2142 model that starts with a basic kit based on nationality, but then is expanded through level upgrades.
The best way to join a game with a friend is to do it via Xfire.

Well, this comes out on Tuesday and I am not 100% sold on buying it yet. It's fun for maybe 15 min at a time for me. Anyone else have thoughts?

yeah, there's something about dying so often that takes some of the fun out of it. Still, what's a gamer to do? I'm going to give it a try and see how it stacks up. i kind of feel like we've played 2142 to death. I guess I can start fresh. That might be fun.

Well, I took advantage of Circuit City closing and picked up a few new games for about $25 a piece. This was one of them. I like the single player so far, should be interesting to see how the multiplayer works.

i haven't played the single player, but i have fallen out of love with the mp version. the spawn system is very poor (think spawning with your back to an enemy 10 yards away), and there are plenty of hacks. So many that I would only play on a server with a kill cam where the bots and wall hacks are much more obvious. I never saw a lot of them in 2142, but I see at least 1 per round in COD WaW. It's really quite sad.
